V stem + 고 있다 (doing) | V stem + 아/어 있다 (state)
Korean has two progressive forms: -고 있다 - Action in progress (like English "-ing") • 지금 공부하고 있어요 = I am studying now • 뭐 하고 있어요? = What are you doing? • Can be past: 공부하고 있었어요 = I was studying -아/어 있다 - Resulting state (action completed, state continues) • 앉아 있어요 = I am sitting (sat down, now in seated state) • 서 있어요 = I am standing • 문이 열려 있어요 = The door is open Key difference: • -고 있다: Focus on the action happening • -아/어 있다: Focus on the resulting state
